Yesterday we had a tour with Karmen who took us around Dubrovnik and showed us the highlights and recommended a number of places to go, restaurants, bars etc. the tour lasted from 4 pm to 6.15. She was great, plenty of history and great information. She asked what we had planned and I said we had a game of thrones tour and then maybe the cable car. She advised against the cable car as it is expensive and nothing much more than the view. She gave us a contact who would drive us up to the top and then she recommended a restaurant Konobo Dubrava where we could have a traditional dish as a late lunch, because we won’t need dinner. She said it would cost around 80 euros for our driver who would also pick us up after our meal. This compared to the cost of the cable car at 35 euros each! It was a no brained. I was able to contact the driver on WhatsApp and then booked the restaurant for 2.30.
After our tour we found a supermarket, stocked up with beers and then pizzas for dinner. A great day
Had a better nights sleep almost six hours, but woke early with cleaners coming in to clear the rubbish bins which are put out overnight. The beds are narrow and with just one sheet and a bed cover they are continually falling off as you roll over, but we will get used to it. We head out for a coffee and doughnut for breakfast. Coffee nice and hot.
We have our Game of Thrones tour at 9 am with Ivo. We meet and Ivo takes us to Kings Landing. As he explains the setting he shows us pictures of scenes from GoT and points out the landmarks and where they differ from the actual sight. He is great and has lots of details on the making of GoT and the shooting and how they controlled the crowds. He tells us that when the city governors were approached they decided to not require the film company to pay any local taxes. Which in hindsight was a great decision, as the tourism from the series has been incredible. So much so that during the peak season there are direct flights from the US to Dubrovnik.
Ivo tells us he was not a GoT fan and had not watched the show but became an extra in the purple wedding where he was a Dornish man. He has a still where you can see him slightly blurred. The extras received 40 euro a day, but the day’s length was not specified. His day lasted 18 hours. He also got an extra 5 euros because he had to shave some of his beard. We walked the walk of shame and he had photos of where the actors were when the film was shot.
It was a great tour and Ivo was very informative.
At 1 pm we went to meet our driver. He was on time and off we went to the top of the mountain. It was a very windy road and towards the end single lane. There were some great sights back down over the city and to the mountains on the other side. We 45 minutes to look around take photos and admire the view. We then head off to lunch. Our driver drops us off and I will contact him when we are finished.
We have a beautiful meal of veal and lamb and potatoes. The dish is cooked under a bell for three hours and all the juices are soaked into the potatoes. It is a traditional dish. We then finish it with a sour cherry and Apple strudel with ice cream. I contact our driver and we are on our way back. It has been another great day. The temperature was 24 with light winds and cloudy to clear skies. We will have an early night tonight.
