Today we leave our lovely apartment and head to the JW Marriott. It is just a 5 minute drive away, but we have been warned about taxi scams, so we booked a transport with our driver’s company from Sunday. He charged 40 euros which is probably expensive but for the convenience it was worth it.
We are ready to leave by 11 and our driver is there. The short drive takes us past parliament building, which is Ceausescu old palace, the largest building in the world. He built it as his mansion when ruling Romania. It is an epithet to his ego.
We reach the Marriott and our rooms are available. It is a huge hotel. So begins our next part of our journey.
Bucharest is a city of large buildings, not sky scrapers, but large solid buildings, some beautiful, others brutalist, it also has many damaged (earthquake) and others in disrepair and dispute in ownership. Homeless were noticeable, graffiti everywhere, broken paved streets, cars parked anywhere, no parking meters or inspectors and many pharmacy shops.
Despite that there were many beautiful parts to the city.
