Sunday
A relaxing day today just sailing along the Danube. Trivia this afternoon we managed to get 17 out of 20 and tied for first. Missed out on the tiebreaker question, number of kilometres between earth and the moon. Was not too disappointed as the prize was a box of biscuits!
The weather is quite cooler today at around 16 degrees and cloudy. After trivia we went for a walk around the track on the sun deck, the ship was moving pretty quick so walking towards the bow there was a strong headwind, so it was a good workout.
Felt a bit unwell at port talk so I decided to skip dinner. Tested for Covid but negative. By the time Ann came back from dinner I was feeling better. Maybe just too much food over the last few days.
Monday
Felt much better this morning after a good night’s sleep. It is a beautiful clear sunny morning, a bit fresh though at 11 degrees. By the time we head out for wine tour it has risen to 13 degrees. We have a short tour of Vidin and have a ten minute stop at a medieval fort. It was originally built as a watchtower by the Romans in the first century AD. Later on in the 14 century it was expanded to its size today by the Ottomans.
We then move on to the winery Dos Alamos. It is 20 minutes outside of Vidin and is a small boutique winery. The winemaker and his wife were great telling of the history of winemaking in the district and how the whole village would join in the two most crucial periods, the trimming of the vines and the harvesting and crushing. The crushing and harvesting is done manually. It is a big festive occasion with some in traditional dress and everyone enjoying themselves. He also said they always taste their wine before breakfast so that they have a clean palate.
We are set up in a large underground room where the barrels are stored. Everyone is seated at an upturned barrel in twos. On the top of the barrel are two wine glasses, two glasses for water, a carafe of water a bowl for dregs, a plate with bread, olives and two cheeses and a lit candle. We start with a white, then a rose and a red. The last red was direct from the barrel. All the wines tasted good. We arrive back at the ship at 11.30.
We have a light lunch as I have managed to get us a table at Portobellos tonight for our wedding anniversary. It is a relaxing afternoon with a stroll through the town and then a couple of drinks in the lounge before dinner. It was a lovely afternoon with the temperature getting into the low 20s.
We have a lovely Italian 5 course meal, first course veal, tuna, anchovies and Parmesan crisp, then minestrone soup, then risotto, followed by pasta and then dessert, mine was chocolate mousse cake, Ann had passion fruit panna cotta. Of course coupled with some lovely wines. We then played trivia which was name that kiss. Scenes of kisses and we had to name the movie. We got 22 out of 30, the winners got 29! It was a fun night. Ross got when harry met sally - eventually. That was his answer for all until it actually came up.
When we got back to our cabin there was a card, chocolates and a bottle of Prosecco from Scenic. A good day.
Still unable to upload photos.
